#4 Rule of Thirds - The Most Famous Rule in Photography
You should not miss this lesson. We’re going to talk about the most famous rule in photography, the rule of thirds. This is a composition guideline that has been used for centuries by artists like Leonardo da Vinci, and for good reason: it grabs attention quickly. This is the rule that made me feel like a “pro” when I first started using it. It’s the rule that made my pictures look different than the snapshots my friends were taking. It’s the rule that made me feel like I knew a secret in taking photos that others didn’t.
It’s a bit of a longer video (13 mins), but that’s because I explore this rule in-depth: the what, the how, why you should use it, and when not to use it.
This rule has been in front of you all along, but now that you’ve learned it, you’ll start seeing it everywhere: magazines, billboards, paintings, movies!
OK, a few things I wanted to ask you: I want to set up a community where you can share your practice shots with me. We’re also going to have a photography challenge soon where you’ll be experimenting with everything you’ve learned so far. I’m thinking of setting up a Facebook group. Does that work for you? If not, any other suggestions? Having a community would help because you’ll learn not only from my lessons but also from each other.
Btw, are you finding these lessons helpful? Please drop me a note. I’d also like to know a little bit about you. Where are you from? What brings you to photography? What are you hoping to get out of these lessons? Is there any topic you’d like me to cover sooner than later?
Thanks to those of you who’ve reached out. I’m happy to know that some of you are watching ShotClass along with your kids. That’s a great strategy because they are going to master this sooner than you, and you are going to learn from them :)
Have a nice, mindful weekend! I know you’re refreshing the browser every 15 minutes to see who won ;)
